Chapter 23

Deadly Egress

Simon stood in knee-deep water. He looked up to the black sky, a dozen stars glowing in the abyssal heavens. A calm dread filled him as he lowered his gaze, and saw silhouettes in the distance.

A mist billowed toward him as he remained still. The foggy mists surrounded him, and dark people stepped closer.

The darkling turned his gaze from left to right, the dark people moving and speaking in strange tongues, but didn’t get any closer.

“Where are you?” Simon asked, his voice echoing through the void.

There was silence, until a whisper touched his ears.

“You do not belong,” the voice said as the water around Simon thundered.

The darkling looked up, a dark, misshapen thing walking in the distance. It towered into the black sky, but he could not see its eyes, or any features other than its incredible size.

Simon was mute as the immense thing turned its back to him, and walked slowly away.

The shadow people pulled back into the mists, and faded away from sight.

Simon bowed his head, the dark universe crushing his soul to dust.

“Wake up!” came a whisper.

Time slowed as Simon lifted his head. He was naked with Roma’s back to him, as the door to their room opened. Masked figures with blades in their hands, and a single horn protruding from their foreheads, rushed in. They were tall, with lean, muscular bodies. Their intentions were plain in their eyes, as they charged toward the bed.

Simon’s hands planted on Roma’s back, and gave her a hard push. The witch’s eyes opened as she was launched sideways from the bed, and crashed onto the floor.

Simon turned to one of the invaders launching into the air, blade over his head, and pointed at the darkling’s bare chest.

“Simon, activating recall,” Rita whispered.

In a blink, clothes, armor, and weapons were on the darkling. Simon didn’t draw his sword, or axe, as he pointed both of his hands, black blood stabbing out.

The invader’s eyes widened as two pointed tentacles streamed to them in an instant, and sharp points penetrated their chest. Blood spurted as Simon whipped the heavy attacker away, while another leapt at Roma, blade in hand.

Black blood flowed back from the now dead attacker, and re-directed across the room.

Roma’s clothes appeared on her body, as her new staff appeared in her hand. She moved her staff to parry the incoming blow, but the ogre over her was launched sideways like a ragdoll, a black tentacle stabbing into their side.

The ogre hit the wall hard as the black tentacle ripped apart their insides. When the tentacle retracted, they were dead by the time they hit the floor.

Roma was to her feet as Simon stepped down off the bed.

“I thought this level was a safe haven?” Simon said.

“It is. I don’t know why this is happening?”

Simon heard a commotion in the neighboring rooms.

“The dungeon changed the rules,” the darkling said and blurred forward.

Simon reached Val’s room, the vamp dressed, with a katana in each hand. She stood over two halves of a single ogre.
